Where to spot
Circumpolar in the cool temperate Southern Ocean, breeding on the Falkland Islands, Kerguelen Islands, and islands off Chile. Disperses widely, sometimes reaching South Africa.
How to spot
Identify by its blue-grey upperparts, white underparts, and a distinct black 'W' or 'M' pattern across its upperwing. The key feature is its noticeably slender bill. Its flight is erratic and undulating. Best observed during pelagic trips in the Southern Ocean.
