The Collared Petrel is a critically endangered gadfly petrel with a distinctive white collar, found in the South Pacific. It is a highly pelagic species, rarely seen close to land.
Where to spot
Breeds on a few islands in the South Pacific, including Gau Island (Fiji) and possibly Vanuatu. Forages in the tropical South Pacific Ocean.
How to spot
Look for its dark grey upperparts, white underparts, and a distinctive pale collar or band around the hind-neck. Its flight is powerful and arcing. Due to its extreme rarity and remote habitat, observation is highly challenging.
When to spot
Breeding season is not fully known but likely occurs during the austral summer. Observations at sea are extremely rare and opportunistic.
