Spotted
The Vanuatu Petrel is a critically endangered gadfly petrel, often considered a recent split from the Collared Petrel complex. It is known from very few sightings.
Where to spot
Known from a few at-sea sightings off Vanuatu and the Coral Sea. Its breeding grounds are unconfirmed but believed to be in the mountains of Espiritu Santo Island, Vanuatu.
How to spot
Identification is extremely challenging due to its rarity and similarity to other dark-backed petrels. Look for dark grey upperparts, white underparts, and a subtle pale collar. Requires considerable luck and dedicated pelagic expeditions in the waters around Vanuatu.
When to spot
Sightings are highly opportunistic and rare, potentially year-round in its assumed marine range. No clear seasonal patterns due to lack of data.
