Spotted
The Tahitian Petrel is a large, dark petrel with white underparts and a broad black underwing, found in the tropical Pacific Ocean. It is a powerful long-distance flyer.
Where to spot
Breeds on several high islands in the tropical Pacific, including Tahiti, New Caledonia, and possibly Vanuatu. Forages widely across the central and western tropical Pacific.
How to spot
Look for its dark brown upperparts, white underparts, and the distinctive broad black bar on its underwing. Its flight is strong and purposeful, with deep wingbeats. Best observed on pelagic trips in the tropical Pacific, particularly off French Polynesia or New Caledonia.
When to spot
Breeding seasons vary by colony location, generally occurring year-round in tropical regions. Can be observed at sea throughout the year within its extensive oceanic distribution.
This species is known to be attracted to ship lights at night, which can sometimes lead to individuals becoming grounded, providing rare opportunities for close observation.
