Spotted
The Trindade Petrel is a large, variable gadfly petrel breeding on remote islands in the South Atlantic. It is known for its complex plumage patterns and agile flight.
Where to spot
Breeds on Trindade Island, Brazil, and possibly on Martim Vaz. Forages in the tropical and subtropical South Atlantic Ocean, north to the Caribbean and off Brazil.
How to spot
Identify by its variable plumage (dark to pale morphs), dark underwing, and strong, arcing flight. Distinguishing from similar Pterodroma species can be difficult and often requires expert knowledge. Best seen on pelagic trips in the tropical South Atlantic.
When to spot
Breeding occurs from July to December. Observed at sea throughout the year, with peak sightings during the breeding season around the islands.
