The Collared Antshrike is a robust antshrike characterized by a distinct black collar, particularly prominent in males. It inhabits the understory of humid forests in the Atlantic Forest region.
Where to spot
Dense undergrowth, secondary growth, and forest edges in humid lowland and foothill forests, endemic to the Atlantic Forest region of southeastern Brazil.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive, resonant 'tew-tew-tew-tew-tew' call. Observe patiently from a distance, focusing on movements in the dense undergrowth. Can be seen foraging low to the ground.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon, especially during the breeding season.
This species exhibits strong sexual dimorphism, with males having a bold black and white pattern and females featuring rufous-brown tones with fine barring.
