The Scaled Antbird is a distinctive species with a unique 'scaled' pattern on its breast and flanks, created by dark feather edgings. It has a rufous back and head.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Atlantic Forest of southeastern Brazil, where it inhabits the understory of humid lowland forests.
How to spot
Requires visiting remnant patches of Atlantic Forest. Listen for its distinctive song. It is highly skulking and difficult to observe.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed during early mornings when singing.
This species is highly threatened and has a very restricted and fragmented distribution, making it a priority for conservation efforts.
