Spotted
The Sickle-winged Guan is a large, dark-colored guan characterized by its distinctive primary feathers that are modified to produce a whirring or 'sickle-wing' sound in flight. It inhabits montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane and cloud forests of the Andes, ranging from western Venezuela and Colombia south through Ecuador and northern Peru.
How to spot
Listen for the characteristic whirring sound of their wings when they fly, which is often the first indication of their presence. Look for them in the mid-to-upper canopy or perched on branches in dense montane forest.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but especially noticeable during early mornings and late afternoons. They are often encountered perching quietly or foraging.
