The Dusky-legged Guan is a widespread cracid of southeastern South America, named for its dark legs. It is a large, dark-bodied bird with a noticeable red dewlap, often found in a variety of forest types.
Where to spot
Inhabits a wide range of forest types, including Atlantic Forest, gallery forests, and woodlands, across southeastern Brazil, Paraguay, Uruguay, and northeastern Argentina.
How to spot
Listen for its loud, resonant vocalizations. Look for its dark silhouette and red dewlap in the mid-to-upper canopy. Patience is key, as they can be elusive.
When to spot
Most active and vocal during the early morning and late afternoon. It is a non-migratory resident species, observable year-round.
