Spotted
The Band-tailed Guan is a large, arboreal game bird native to the northern Andes, characterized by its dark plumage and a distinctive pale band across its tail. It typically inhabits humid montane forests.
Where to spot
Found in the northern Andes, primarily in Colombia and northwestern Venezuela. Look for it in humid montane forests, cloud forests, and dense secondary growth at elevations typically between 1,000 and 2,500 meters.
How to spot
Listen for their deep, resonant hooting calls, often given from within dense forest. Look for their large, dark silhouettes in the upper canopy. The pale band on the tail is a key identification feature when seen well.
When to spot
Present year-round. Best observed during early morning and late afternoon when they are most active. Breeding season may offer better chances to hear their booming calls.

Despite its large size, the Band-tailed Guan is an agile climber and glider, moving silently through the forest canopy as it forages for fruits and leaves.
