The Andean Guan is a large, dark-plumaged cracid native to the high-altitude cloud forests of the Andes mountains. It is characterized by its prominent crest and a relatively long tail.
Where to spot
Found in humid montane and cloud forests along the Andes in Colombia and Ecuador, typically at elevations between 1,500 and 2,500 meters.
How to spot
Requires patient searching in dense montane forests. Look for its dark silhouette and distinctive crest. Listen for its loud, resonant calls, which often carry far through the misty mountains.
When to spot
Most active during the early morning and late afternoon. It is a resident species, observable year-round in its habitat.
