Spotted
The Bearded Guan is a distinctive and rare guan species of the Andean cloud forests, easily identified by the prominent bushy white beard-like feathers around its chin. It has dark, glossy plumage.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Andes of Ecuador and northern Peru. It inhabits humid montane forests, cloud forests, and elfin forests, typically at elevations between 1,500 and 3,000 meters.
How to spot
Seek them in dense cloud forest. Look for their dark plumage and, most importantly, the prominent white beard. Listen for their deep, booming vocalizations, which carry through the misty forest. Use binoculars to scan the mid to upper canopy.
When to spot
Active year-round. Dawn and dusk are the best times for observation when they are more vocal and visible. Patience is often required due to their shy nature.
