Spotted
The Seychelles Swiftlet is a small, dark swiftlet species endemic to the Seychelles islands in the Indian Ocean. It is known for its graceful and tireless flight as it hunts insects over its island home.
Where to spot
Endemic to the granitic islands of the Seychelles (e.g., Mahé, Praslin, Silhouette). Found over forests, coastal areas, and near cliff faces and cave systems where it roosts.
How to spot
Look for its relatively small size and dark, uniform plumage. Observe its rapid, sweeping flight, often in groups, particularly around cave entrances. Listen for its distinctive clicking calls, especially when near roosting sites or in low-light conditions.
When to spot
Year-round resident, active throughout the day, particularly prominent around dawn and dusk when large numbers gather at roosting sites.
This swiftlet is one of the few bird species globally that uses echolocation to navigate within the dark caves where it roosts and nests, emitting rapid clicking sounds to 'see' its surroundings.
