The Mottled Swift is a large, powerful swift found across much of sub-Saharan Africa. Recognized by its dark plumage mottled with paler underparts, it is a master of aerial existence, spending virtually its entire life in flight.
Where to spot
Widespread across sub-Saharan Africa, favoring mountainous regions, cliffs, and rocky outcrops, but also found over savanna and open woodlands.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive large size and broad wings with a relatively shallow fork in the tail. Often seen in groups, soaring effortlessly on thermals or flying rapidly over their nesting cliffs. Listen for their loud, screaming calls.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially prominent during the warmer hours when insects are abundant. Often seen soaring high in the sky.
