Spotted
The Black-nest Swiftlet is a large and robust swiftlet species widely distributed across Southeast Asia. It is famous for its substantial nests, which are sought after for the edible birds' nest industry.
Where to spot
Found from Myanmar, Thailand, Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, Borneo, and Java to the Philippines. It inhabits coastal areas, lowlands, and even urban environments, particularly near large cave systems.
How to spot
Look for large, dark swiftlets with broad wings and a relatively slow, powerful flight compared to other swiftlets. Their large size is a good field mark. Observe huge flocks around major cave entrances.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, especially prominent at dawn and dusk when large numbers enter and exit their communal roosting caves. Present year-round.

This swiftlet builds its nest almost entirely from hardened saliva, which can be dark and somewhat coarse, giving the species its common name. It also uses echolocation for cave navigation.
