Spotted
A distinctive swift endemic to Madagascar, recognizable by its white rump and undertail-coverts contrasting with its dark body. It's an important aerial insectivore of the island's ecosystems.
Where to spot
Endemic to Madagascar, found throughout various forest types from humid lowland to montane, often seen foraging over clearings and forest edges.
How to spot
Look for a medium-sized dark swift with a very obvious white rump and white undertail-coverts, which are key diagnostic features even from a distance. Its flight is rapid and direct.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round on the island. Most active during the day when foraging for aerial insects. Look for them especially in the morning and late afternoon.
Unlike many swifts that nest in caves or cliffs, the Madagascan Spinetail is known to build its nests within hollow trees, utilizing tree cavities for protection.
