A relatively recently described swift species from Mexico, characterized by a subtle white forehead patch and generally dark plumage. It is found in mountainous regions.
Where to spot
Endemic to Mexico, primarily found in the Sierra Madre del Sur in Oaxaca and Guerrero. Often observed over pine-oak forests, canyons, and rugged terrain.
How to spot
Identifying this swift requires excellent views to spot the white forehead patch, which can be challenging due to its fast flight and dark body. Look for groups foraging high in the sky.
When to spot
Generally observed during the breeding season (summer months) when they are more active around nesting sites. May be present year-round in some specific areas.
This species was only formally described to science in 1992, highlighting how new bird species can still be discovered and recognized even in well-studied regions.
