Spotted
The Marquesan Swiftlet is a swiftlet species endemic to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia. It is a small, dark aerial insectivore, perfectly adapted to the rugged volcanic landscapes of its island home.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Marquesas Islands in French Polynesia, particularly found on islands like Nuku Hiva, Hiva Oa, and Ua Huka. It inhabits montane forests, cliffs, and coastal areas.
How to spot
Look for dark, fast-flying swiftlets over the mountainous and forested areas of the Marquesas. Their restricted geographic range is a primary identification cue. Observing them near cave entrances or high cliffs is often productive.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, year-round. They are often seen soaring high above the rugged terrain.
Like many of its close relatives, the Marquesan Swiftlet possesses the remarkable ability to echolocate, allowing it to navigate and find its way within the dark recesses of the volcanic caves where it roosts and nests.
