The African Wattled Lapwing is a common and conspicuous wader found across much of sub-Saharan Africa. It is characterized by prominent red and yellow facial wattles and a black belly patch.
Where to spot
Widespread across open savannas, grasslands, and agricultural fields throughout sub-Saharan Africa, often near water.
How to spot
Look for them in open, dry to moist grasslands and cultivated areas. The large red and yellow wattles are unmistakable. Listen for their loud, raucous calls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its extensive range. Most active during the day, often seen foraging in open ground.
The extensive wattles on its face are particularly noticeable and become more prominent during the breeding season, playing a role in display and communication.
