Spotted by
The Little Ringed Plover is a small, inconspicuous plover, similar to the Common Ringed Plover but lacking a white wing-bar and possessing a distinctive yellow eye-ring. It strongly prefers inland freshwater habitats.
Where to spot
Widespread across Europe and Asia, breeding inland near freshwater, and wintering south to Africa and parts of Asia. Found near ponds, gravel pits, river edges, and flooded fields.
How to spot
Differentiate from Common Ringed Plover by its entirely dark bill (no orange base), lack of a white wing-bar in flight, and a prominent yellow eye-ring. Its call is a soft, whistled 'peeu' or 'pee-oo'.
When to spot
Best observed during the breeding season (spring/summer) in its northern range, or during migration (spring/autumn) at inland wetlands and suitable stopover sites.
