Where to spot
Strictly limited to the Chatham Islands archipelago, east of mainland New Zealand, inhabiting sandy beaches, dunelands, and rocky shores.
How to spot
Observation is very restricted due to its extreme rarity and protected status. Any observation requires specialized permits and expert guidance on the Chatham Islands. Look for its striking black mask and breast band against pale plumage.
