The Common Ringed Plover is a small, stocky plover distinguished by its prominent black breast band, white collar, and short orange-based bill. It is a familiar sight on European and Asian coastlines.
Where to spot
Breeds across northern Europe and Asia, wintering south to Africa and parts of southern Asia. Found on sandy or shingle beaches, mudflats, estuaries, and sometimes inland gravel pits.
How to spot
Easily identified by its single black breast band (some other plovers have double bands), white forehead, and short orange bill with a black tip. It has a characteristic stop-and-run feeding behavior. Listen for its soft, fluty 'too-lee' or 'poo-ip' call.
When to spot
Year-round in some temperate coastal areas; best observed during spring and autumn migration along coastlines, or during the breeding season (spring/summer) in its northern range.

Despite its small size, the Common Ringed Plover undertakes impressive migratory journeys, often traveling thousands of kilometers between its Arctic breeding grounds and its wintering areas in Africa and southern Asia.
