Where to spot
High Andean plateaus and grasslands, typically above 3,000 meters, from southern Colombia through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and northern Chile/Argentina.

Scan open, high-altitude grasslands and marshy areas. Its glossy black plumage with green sheen and bright red wattle are distinctive. Listen for its loud, ringing calls.
