The Andean Lapwing is a large, colorful wader endemic to the high Andes of South America. It is distinguished by its green-glossed black plumage, prominent red wattle, and yellow legs.
Where to spot
High Andean plateaus and grasslands, typically above 3,000 meters, from southern Colombia through Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and northern Chile/Argentina.
How to spot
Scan open, high-altitude grasslands and marshy areas. Its glossy black plumage with green sheen and bright red wattle are distinctive. Listen for its loud, ringing calls.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round in its highland range, though less active during extreme winter conditions. Best during austral summer when foraging is more active.

This species inhabits some of the highest elevations of any lapwing, often found in puna grasslands and high-altitude wetlands, demonstrating remarkable adaptation to cold, thin air environments.
