Spotted
The Diademed Plover is a beautiful and elusive plover of the high Andes, known for its distinctive facial pattern and crown. It inhabits the cold, arid environments of the mountains.
Where to spot
High-altitude wetlands, bogs, and marshy areas in the Andes of Peru, Bolivia, Chile, and Argentina.
How to spot
Seek out high-altitude bogs and wet grasslands. Use a spotting scope for distant views as they can be shy. Look for its distinctive head pattern, which includes a black 'diadem' or band.
When to spot
Primarily during the austral summer (November to March) when conditions are most favorable for breeding. Less common in winter as they move to slightly lower elevations.
