Przevalski's Parrotbill is a distinctive and rare species found in the high-altitude bamboo forests of central China. It is named after the Russian explorer Nikolay Przevalsky.
Where to spot
Endemic to central China, primarily in Qinghai and Gansu provinces. Strictly confined to dense bamboo thickets within high-altitude coniferous and mixed forests.
How to spot
Its overall dull brownish plumage with a slightly darker cap and faint facial markings make it difficult to spot. Listen for its high-pitched, slightly mournful calls, which are the best way to locate it in dense bamboo.
When to spot
Resident year-round. It is a very secretive bird. Observing it requires significant effort, often in spring-summer during the breeding season when males are more vocal.
