Spotted
The Wrentit is a small, unique songbird native to the chaparral and scrub habitats of western North America. It is known for its secretive nature and distinctive 'ping-pong ball' call.
Where to spot
Found along the Pacific coast of North America, from Oregon south through California into Baja California. Inhabits dense chaparral, coastal scrub, and riparian thickets.
How to spot
It is typically heard more often than seen. Listen for its characteristic accelerating 'ping-pong ball' song. If spotted, look for its plain brown plumage, long tail often held cocked, and pale eye.
When to spot
Resident year-round. Most active at dawn and dusk. Easier to detect by voice during the breeding season (spring-early summer) when males are more vocal.
