Spotted
The Rusty-throated Parrotbill (Zappeyi group) is a distinctive parrotbill species found in the mountain forests of central China. It is characterized by its dull plumage and rufous throat patch.
Where to spot
Endemic to central China, primarily in Sichuan and Gansu provinces. Found in temperate montane forests with dense bamboo thickets, often at high elevations.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive calls, as it can be shy and difficult to spot in dense vegetation. Look for its short, stout, parrot-like bill and general dull brownish plumage with a rufous throat patch.
When to spot
Present year-round in its native range. Best observed during spring and summer (April-August) when breeding activity is higher and individuals may be more vocal.

Unlike many more brightly colored parrotbills, this species relies on its subdued plumage for camouflage within the dense bamboo undergrowth it often inhabits.
