Spotted
Ruspoli's Turaco is a rare and endangered species, endemic to a very restricted area in southern Ethiopia. It is predominantly green with a distinctive red crest and a unique yellow-tipped bill.
Where to spot
Highly localized to dry, deciduous woodlands and riverine forests in a small region of southern Ethiopia, specifically in the Sidamo province.
How to spot
Locating this species is very challenging and often requires local expert guidance. Look for its unique red crown and listen for its calls, which are less harsh than those of many other turacos.
When to spot
Present year-round, but due to its rarity and restricted range, finding it requires specialized effort. Early mornings are typically the most active period.
This turaco was first discovered in 1896 and remains one of the least known and most range-restricted species within the turaco family.
