The Pink-headed Imperial-Pigeon is a beautiful and distinct pigeon species, named for the subtle yet noticeable pinkish hue on its head and neck. It is endemic to Indonesia's Lesser Sunda Islands.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Lesser Sunda Islands of Indonesia, including Timor, Sumba, and Flores, typically found in lowland and monsoon forests, and sometimes venturing into cultivated areas.
How to spot
Scan the canopies of forest trees for its large size and distinct pinkish head. Binoculars are helpful to appreciate the subtle coloration. Listen for its deep, soft cooing calls.
When to spot
Present throughout the year. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when actively foraging. Look for them during the dry season when many trees are fruiting.
The intensity of the pink coloration on the head can vary between individuals and possibly with age or breeding condition, making each sighting potentially unique.
