The Buff-fronted Quail-Dove is a vibrant and elusive ground dove found in the humid montane forests of Central America. It is known for its beautiful iridescence and shy, terrestrial nature.
Where to spot
Found in the mountains of Costa Rica and western Panama, primarily inhabiting humid montane and cloud forests at various elevations.
How to spot
Search for it on the ground in dense cloud forest understory. Its brilliant iridescence, particularly on the back and neck, can be striking when seen in good light, but it often remains hidden. Listen for its distinctive low hooting call.
When to spot
A year-round resident; most active at dawn and dusk, when it may occasionally be seen crossing trails or calling.
