Spotted
Baker's Imperial-Pigeon is a large, dark imperial pigeon that is restricted to a few islands in Vanuatu. It is known for its rather secretive nature and striking red eyes.
Where to spot
Endemic to certain islands in Vanuatu, particularly Espiritu Santo and Malakula. It inhabits primary and mature secondary forests, often in mountainous areas at mid to high elevations.
How to spot
Look for a large, uniformly dark pigeon with a powerful flight. If seen well, its red eyes can be a distinguishing feature. Patient observation and listening for its deep, booming coo calls are crucial for detection.
When to spot
Active during the day, though its elusive nature makes it challenging to spot. The best chances for observation are often during early morning or late afternoon when they are most vocal or active.
This species is classified as Near Threatened, primarily due to its restricted range and ongoing habitat loss from logging and agricultural expansion on its native islands.
