Spotted
The Large Green Pigeon is an impressive and robust species, significantly larger than most other green pigeons. Its considerable size and relatively plain green plumage make it distinct.
Where to spot
Found in Southeast Asia, from southern Myanmar and Thailand through Peninsular Malaysia, Sumatra, and Borneo, primarily in lowland primary and tall secondary forests, often near fruiting trees.
How to spot
Look for its large size and robust build high in the forest canopy, especially around fruiting fig trees. Listen for its deep, resonant cooing, which is a good way to locate this often-cryptic bird.
When to spot
Observable year-round as a resident species. Typically active during daylight hours, especially morning and late afternoon when foraging for fruit.
This species is known for its remarkable ability to swallow exceptionally large fruits whole, including those with substantial seeds, due to its highly elastic gape.
