Spotted
The Diamond Dove is a tiny, delicate pigeon, famous for the striking white spots that adorn its wings, resembling scattered diamonds. It is a common and beloved resident of arid and semi-arid regions of Australia.
Where to spot
Widespread across most of mainland Australia, particularly in arid and semi-arid zones, preferring open woodlands, scrublands, grasslands, and areas near water. Less common in extreme coastal or densely forested areas.
How to spot
Identify by its very small size, grey plumage, red eye-ring, and distinctive white "diamond" spots on its wings. Observe its characteristic gentle, soft cooing call and its quick, direct flight.
When to spot
Active during the day, especially prominent at waterholes in the morning and late afternoon. They can be seen foraging on the ground throughout the day.
