An endemic antpitta of the isolated Santa Marta Mountains, easily recognizable by its rufous-brown plumage and distinct call. It is a shy resident of the dense montane forest understory.
Where to spot
Endemic to the humid montane forests and cloud forests of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta in northern Colombia, typically at elevations above 1,500 meters.
How to spot
Listen for its characteristic loud, repetitive hooting call, which echoes through the forest. Observing it requires quiet persistence in suitable forest habitats within its range, as it remains highly concealed on the forest floor.
When to spot
Most vocal and active during the early morning, especially at dawn. It is present year-round within its restricted endemic range.
