Spotted
A recently described species of antpitta, endemic to a very restricted area in the Andes of Peru. It is a rare and highly localized inhabitant of humid montane forest undergrowth.
Where to spot
Endemic to a very small area of humid montane forest on the eastern slopes of the Andes in central Peru, specifically in the Junín department.
How to spot
Listening for its unique vocalizations is paramount for detection. Due to its extreme shyness and limited range, finding it requires dedicated effort, often with local expertise, in its dense forest habitat.
When to spot
Best observed during early morning hours, especially at dawn, when it is most vocal. Active year-round within its specific high-altitude cloud forest habitat.
Named after John P. O'Neill, a prominent ornithologist and artist who has contributed immensely to the study of Neotropical birds, this species was formally described in 2020.
