Spotted
A relatively common and widespread antpitta found in high-elevation paramo and cloud forest edges. Its tawny-brown plumage helps it blend into its grassy, shrubby habitat.
Where to spot
Found in the high-elevation grasslands (paramo), scrub, and forest edges of the Andes, from southern Colombia through Ecuador and Peru. Typically above 3,000 meters.
How to spot
Look for its distinctive 'bobbing' behavior as it walks on the ground. Listen for its loud, repetitive hooting call. It can be less shy than other antpittas, sometimes foraging near trails.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, but especially vocal and visible during early morning and late afternoon. Can be observed year-round in its range.

Unlike many deep-forest antpittas, the Tawny Antpitta can sometimes be seen in more open paramo habitat, often near roadsides, making it one of the 'easier' antpittas to spot.
