Spotted
The Peaceful Dove is a small, common dove found across much of Australia and New Guinea, characterized by its fine barring on the neck and breast, similar to a Zebra Dove but with subtle differences. It is often observed foraging on the ground.
Where to spot
Widespread across mainland Australia (excluding the driest deserts) and southern New Guinea, found in a variety of open habitats including woodlands, forests, grasslands, farmlands, and urban areas.
How to spot
Identify by its small size, grey head, pinkish breast, and fine black barring on the neck and upper breast. Distinguish from Zebra Dove by subtle differences in barring and call. Listen for its soft, repetitive "doo-wup" or "coo-lu-cook" call.
When to spot
Active during the day, commonly observed foraging on the ground, especially in the morning and late afternoon.
