Spotted
The Mangole Fruit Dove is a striking and relatively recently recognized species of fruit dove. Known for its vibrant plumage, it is a secretive inhabitant of specific Indonesian islands.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Mangole and Taliabu islands within the Sula Archipelago of Indonesia. It typically inhabits primary and mature secondary lowland forests.
How to spot
Look for movement high in the canopy of fruiting trees. While vibrant, its colors can blend surprisingly well with the dappled light of the forest. Listen for soft, cooing calls and use binoculars for identification.
When to spot
Can be observed year-round within its limited native range. Best times for observation are generally early mornings or late afternoons when the birds are most active in foraging for fruit.
This species was only formally recognized as distinct from the Black-naped Fruit Dove in the early 21st century, highlighting the ongoing discoveries in avian taxonomy, even for colorful birds.
