The Rarotonga Fruit-dove (Ptilinopus rarotongensis) is a critically endangered and highly localized fruit-dove, found exclusively on the island of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. It is admired for its unique and subtle coloration.
Where to spot
Confined to the remaining patches of native montane and lowland forest on Rarotonga, Cook Islands.
How to spot
Requires dedicated and patient searching in dense forest. Listen for its distinctive calls, which can be the best clue to its presence in the canopy.
When to spot
Observation is possible year-round, but patience is required due to its rarity. They may be more vocal during the breeding season.
With an estimated population of only a few hundred individuals, this species is one of the world's most endangered fruit-doves, facing significant threats from introduced predators.
