The Pinon Imperial-Pigeon is a large and widespread species across New Guinea and surrounding islands. It is easily recognized by its generally pale grey plumage with contrasting dark primary feathers.
Where to spot
Found across New Guinea, the Bismarck Archipelago, and several smaller islands in the region. It inhabits lowland rainforests, monsoon forests, and sometimes moves into cultivated areas and mangroves.
How to spot
Look for its large size, pale grey body, and dark wings, particularly prominent in flight. Its flight is powerful and direct. Listen for its deep, booming calls, which are a characteristic sound of its habitat.
When to spot
Active throughout the day, often observed in large flocks flying to and from feeding or roosting sites, especially during the mornings and evenings. It is present year-round.
