Spotted
The Nubian Nightjar is a small and exquisitely camouflaged nightjar found in arid and semi-arid regions of northeastern Africa and the Middle East. It is characterized by its relatively short wings and tail.
Where to spot
Found in Northeastern Africa (e.g., Sudan, Egypt, Ethiopia) and parts of the Arabian Peninsula, inhabiting deserts, wadis, and rocky areas with sparse vegetation.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive call, often a soft, repeated 'whirr' or 'churr.' Its small size and excellent camouflage make it challenging to spot during the day; scan the ground near sparse shrubs or rocks.
When to spot
Nocturnal, primarily active at dusk and dawn. Can be observed year-round in its resident range.
