Spotted
Bates's Nightjar is a large and robust species found in the tropical rainforests of Central Africa. Its rich, dark plumage provides effective camouflage against the dense forest floor and undergrowth.
Where to spot
Found in the tropical rainforests of West and Central Africa, from Sierra Leone east to Uganda and south to Angola. It prefers the interior of dense forests.
How to spot
Listen for its deep, resonant call, often described as a series of 'chrr-chrr-chrr' notes, which carries well through the forest. Spotlighting along forest roads, clearings, or rivers at night may reveal individuals on the ground or low perches.
When to spot
Strictly nocturnal, becoming active from dusk and foraging throughout the night until dawn.

Bates's Nightjar often perches on elevated spots such as fallen logs, low branches, or exposed roots, from where it launches aerial forays to catch large insects in flight.
