Where to spot
Widely distributed across western North America, from southern Canada through the western United States and into northern Mexico. It prefers arid and semi-arid shrublands, open woodlands, and rocky areas.
How to spot
Listen for its distinctive 'poor-will' call. To spot it, scan open roads or flat, rocky areas with a spotlight at night. During the day, search for its camouflaged form on the ground or nestled in rocky outcrops.

Primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, it is most active at dusk and dawn. During the day, it roosts camouflaged on the ground or among rocks.
