The Spotted Nightjar is a master of camouflage, blending seamlessly with its surroundings. This nocturnal bird is known for its distinctive 'chop-chop-chop' call and agile flight as it hunts insects after dark.
Where to spot
Found across various habitats in Australia and New Guinea, including woodlands, savannas, grasslands, and semi-arid regions. They prefer open areas with scattered trees.
How to spot
Listen for their call at twilight. Spotting them during the day requires sharp eyes, as their plumage provides excellent camouflage against leaf litter or bark. Look for movement or the outline of a bird perched horizontally.
When to spot
Primarily crepuscular and nocturnal, they are best observed at dusk and dawn when they are most active. During the day, they rest camouflaged on the ground or low branches.
