Prigogine's Nightjar, also known as the Itombwe Nightjar, is an exceptionally rare and critically endangered species, known only from a few specimens collected in the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is one of the world's most mysterious and elusive birds.
Where to spot
Believed to inhabit montane forests in the Itombwe Mountains of eastern Democratic Republic of Congo. Its exact habitat requirements and distribution are still largely unknown.
How to spot
Extremely difficult to observe due to its rarity and remote, challenging habitat. Targeted expeditions and extensive acoustic surveys in its known historical range are the only current methods for potential rediscovery.
When to spot
As a nightjar, it would be active at night, particularly dusk and dawn. However, given its extreme rarity, any observation time would be globally significant.

This species was only formally described in 1990 and has been subject to very few confirmed sightings since, leading many ornithologists to consider it a 'lost' or 'ghost' bird.
