Spotted
The Ornate Fruit Dove is a truly spectacular bird, adorned with intricate patterns of green, purple, yellow, and grey, giving it an almost painted appearance. This colorful species is a resident of New Guinea's tropical forests.
Where to spot
Endemic to New Guinea and a few nearby islands. Inhabits lowland and lower montane rainforests.
How to spot
Look for them high in the canopy of fruiting trees. While brilliantly colored, their patterns help them blend with dappled light. Listening for their deep, resonant 'coo-coo-coo' calls is often the best way to locate this stunning and shy bird.
When to spot
Most active in the early morning and late afternoon while foraging for fruits. It is a resident species, observable throughout the year.
Its remarkably complex and 'ornate' plumage patterning is highly unique among fruit doves, making it one of the most visually captivating species in its genus globally.
