Spotted
The Maroon-chested Ground-Dove is a secretive and elusive dove of montane cloud forests. Males are distinguished by their rich maroon breast and iridescent blue-black upperparts, while females are duller brown.
Where to spot
Found in scattered populations across mountainous regions from southern Mexico through Central America and the Andes of South America (Colombia to Bolivia). Inhabits humid montane evergreen and cloud forests.
How to spot
Requires patience and quiet observation in dense montane forest. Look for its distinctive coloration, especially the male's maroon breast. Listen for its low, mournful hoot, which can often be the best way to detect its presence.
When to spot
Year-round resident. Best observed in the early morning or late afternoon when foraging on the forest floor.

Its preference for dense cloud forest understory at high elevations makes it one of the more challenging Neotropical doves to observe in its natural habitat.
