Spotted
The Chatham Island Pigeon is a distinct species or subspecies closely related to the New Zealand Pigeon, endemic to the Chatham Islands, east of New Zealand. It is a large, stately pigeon vital for seed dispersal on the islands.
Where to spot
Endemic to the Chatham Islands group, New Zealand, found in remaining fragments of native forest and regenerating bush.
How to spot
Look for a large pigeon with iridescent dark upperparts and a white belly in the canopy of native trees. It can be quite shy, so patient observation from a distance is best.
When to spot
Year-round, during daylight hours. Activity increases during periods of fruit abundance.

The Chatham Island Pigeon is slightly smaller and generally duller in plumage than the mainland New Zealand Pigeon, reflecting its adaptation to its specific island environment and available food sources.
