Spotted
The Micronesian Megapode is a small, dark, shy ground-dwelling bird found across various islands in Micronesia. Like other megapodes, it does not incubate its eggs directly but relies on natural heat sources.
Where to spot
Endemic to several islands in Micronesia, including parts of Palau and the Mariana Islands (e.g., Saipan, Tinian, Rota).
How to spot
Look for them in dense forest undergrowth, often near coastal areas or in disturbed ground. Listen for rustling in the leaf litter or their soft calls.
When to spot
Active year-round. Best observed during early morning or late afternoon when they are typically foraging.

This megapode primarily uses decaying vegetation or sun-warmed sand, and occasionally geothermal activity, to incubate its eggs in large mound nests.
