Spotted
The Brown-collared Talegalla is a species of megapode endemic to a specific region of New Guinea. It is characterized by its predominantly black plumage with a distinctive brownish or rufous-chestnut collar around its neck.
Where to spot
Endemic to northern New Guinea, primarily found in the lowlands and foothills of the Adelbert Mountains and surrounding areas. It inhabits rainforests and disturbed forest edges.
How to spot
Identify this species by its large, black, turkey-like body and, most importantly, the clear brown or rufous-chestnut collar on its neck. They are ground-dwelling and can be elusive in dense vegetation. Listen for their resonant hooting calls, which often reveal their presence.
When to spot
Year-round. As with other megapodes, observing them on the forest floor is best during dawn or dusk when they are most active.

The incubation mounds built by male Talegallas can be massive, with some recorded as several meters in diameter and height. These birds meticulously maintain these structures to ensure optimal temperature for the developing eggs over many months.
